What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into NAMI, the nation’s leading voice on mental health. Today, NAMI Buffalo & Erie County is made up of hundreds of members and donors working together in our community since 1984 to raise awareness and provide support and education for families in need.
National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Buffalo & Erie County has served Western New York since 1984 and continues to support, educate and advocate for families and caregivers of individuals affected by mental illness. A non-profit agency, NAMI’s dedicated volunteers and members are responsible for improving the lives of so many facing the challenges of mental illness every day.
An organization of hundreds of families and friends who have a loved one with serious mental illness, our volunteer leaders and staff have many years of experience coping with the illnesses of their own loved ones and with the mental health system. We are committed to assisting, educating, and supporting other families facing the challenges of mental illness and recovery.
We listen. Our trained HelpLine volunteers respond personally to hundreds of requests each year, providing understanding, and free information and support—a much-needed lifeline for many.

“The most beneficial thing for me was that I am not alone.
I found the NAMI Family Support Group at the time I really needed it!”
“Program was very well run and organized and teachers created an open, supportive environment. Conversations were very respectful of participants’ emotions and diversity of background and experience with mental illnesses in our families.”
